Lawrence Tech hosts two digital humanities events — Sept. 27 & 28

Lawrence Technnological University in Southfield is hosting two upcoming digital humanities events: Network Detroit on Sept. 27, and Great Lakes THATCamp on Sept. 28. The “Network Detroit, Digital Humanities Theory and Practice” conference will be a laboratory for working out ways to re-imagine the boundaries that dominate discussions about the future of the digital humanities: large versus small, center versus camp, elite versus upstart, disciplinary versus collaborative, peer review versus public interest. The keynote speaker will be Ethan Watrall, an archaeologist who has worked extensively throughout North America and the Near East. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Associate Director of MATRIX: The Center for Digital Humanities & Social Sciences at Michigan State University. In addition, Ethan is Director of the Cultural Heritage Informatics Initiative and the Cultural Heritage Informatics Fieldschool at Michigan State University. Ethan’s primary interests lie in the domain of digital cultural heritage and digital archaeology, with particular focus on serious games & meaningful play, mobile & geospatial (mostly within the context of public outreach and engagement), and linked open archaeological data. The Great Lakes THATCamp, which stands for The Humanities and Technology Camp,  is co-hosted by LTU and U-M, and is sponsored in part by MLibrary, the U-M School of Information, and the Institute for Humanities. The format is an “unconference,” meaning that there is no formal posters or presentation. Instead, participants apply to attend and bring ideas about what to talk about or work on. Admission is free.
