August 19, 2014 @ 12:00 am - August 21, 2014 @ 12:00 am

ARC (Advanced Research Computing) and CSCAR (Center for Statistical Consultation and Research) are co-sponsoring a workshop open to all members of the U-M community. The focus of the workshop will be using Python in research involving data processing and analysis. The workshop will be held August 19, 20, and 21 (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. each day in Room 335, West Hall.

This is an intermediate-level workshop intended for people who have some programming experience in a statistical package or data processing language (e.g. R, Matlab, Stata). Prior experience with Python is helpful but not required. You may bring your own laptop if you wish to experiment with the examples during the workshop, but this is not required. The lecture room does not have computers.

The workshop will be organized around case studies of analyses involving challenging data sets. Most of our time will be spent walking through analysis scripts. We will discuss language concepts and libraries as they arise in the case studies. Exercises will be provided at the end of each workshop day to give participants the opportunity to work with the tools being discussed. We will briefly review how U-M researchers can access Python, including using U-M resources, cloud resources, and installing the software on your own machine. CSCAR can provide follow-up consulting for participants who wish to use Python in their research. All course materials will be available through this wiki. Feel free to look around to get a sense of what we will be covering. The materials will be under development until the workshop begins. This is an informal workshop, there is no registration. There is no charge to attend.

Directions West Hall houses the ‘Engineering Arch’ entrance to the Diag at the corner of South University and East University, near Ulrich’s Bookstore and the Espresso Royale.  Room 335 is on the Diag side of the third floor about halfway between the arch and the Randall Laboratory building.  If you need to use the elevator, you should enter on the north side, closest to Randall Laboratory.
