College of Engineering Beyster Doctoral Student Fellowship Nominations Open Through March 1, 2013

Faculty nominations and doctoral student applications for the annual College of Engineering J. Robert Beyster Computational Innovation Graduate Fellows Program opened Friday, February 1, 2013 and will be accepted through March 1, 2013. The program was established by four-time alum Dr. J. Robert Beyster (BSEs in Engineering Math and Engineering Physics 1945, an MS in Physics 1947, and a PhD in Physics 1950) and his wife Betty to acknowledge that Ph.D. students are “the originators and carriers of innovative ideas and solutions from the University to the world”, and to emphasize the pivotal role that high-performance computing must play in solving our societal challenges. Applicants should be performing research that links high-performance computing, networking and storage to applications of societal importance in the following areas:

  • Bioinformatics (including genomics and modeling/study of the brain)
  • Computer and Network Security (including mobile computing and in the cloud)
  • Computational Materials (including for renewable energy and biological materials)
  • Computational Electromagnetics (including for imaging and stealth technology)
  • Autonomous Systems (including automotive safety and military air, land, sea, and underwater vehicles)
  • Multi-physics Simulation (including radiation and thermal transport, and reactor safety)

The awardee of the fellowship will be asked to:

  • Provide a profile for the Beyster Fellows website.
  • Have their name appear on the signage in Tishman Hall of the Beyster Building.
  • Provide a written summary of their work when the fellowship is complete.
  • Be available for a conference call with Dr. Beyster to discuss the research.

Information and Requirements:

  • There is one (1) fellowship currently available, with additional fellowships to follow in subsequent years.
  • This fellowship will fund tuition, a stipend, and health care for the Fall and Winter terms.
  • This fellowship is open to U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents only.
  • Applicants must be Ph.D. candidates who are starting their 3rd or 4th year at the beginning of the fellowship period (Fall 2013 term).
  • The faculty advisor/department will submit all the nomination materials.
  • The deadline for nominations is March 1, 2013.
  • The Selection Committee will determine the awardee by March 15, 2013.

Nomination Process:

  • Complete the nomination form.
  • Attach a faculty advisor letter of support, student CV/resume, description of student research, as a single pdf file.
